Caithnesians and regular visitors will doubtless know of Wolfburn’s association with the wonderful Mey Highland Games, an annual event hosted by HRH Prince Charles – himself a visitor to the distillery last summer. Just like previous years a special bottling was planned – and then coronavirus came along and scuppered everyone’s plans, which was doubly sad as 2020 was to have been the 50th anniversary of the Games. Rather than be defeated we decided to cock a snoop at covid and press ahead with the ‘postponed’ special release. Crafted from spirit matured for six years in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, it’s a wonderful wee drop of whisky, which we hope is widely enjoyed.
NOSE
Glorious sherry tones are overlaid with hints of honey and demerara sugar. There’s a promising depth of aromas, fruit and flowers and sweetness.
TASTE
Rich oily and creamy flavours lead the way; this is a bountiful mouthful indeed. Caramel is present with warming vanilla tones throughout, mixed with hints of toffee and syrup.
FINISH
Floral flavours gradually melt away, leaving the sweetest tones to the very end. More like this please – it is a true pleasure from beginning to end!
